How to squeeze the nose during bleeding

This picture shows how to squeeze the nose as a first aid measure during an episode of bleeding from nose. Keeping an ice cap on the nose also helps to arrest bleeding. These measures work only if bleeding is mild. Nasal bleeding in an adult can be heavy and dangerous. First aid should be administered and the patient taken to hospital as soon as possible. Treatment should be given under the supervision of an ENT Surgeon. Blood loss will be estimated at the hospital and a blood transfusion may be required. A sample of blood from the patient will be taken to the blood bank and laboratory for investigation – to detect blood group and any other diseases. Blood vessels should be blocked by nasal packs or clips to stop further bleeding. The patient should be kept calm and under the supervision of doctors and nurses for a few days. The patient may need to be examined under anesthesia with a telescope to investigate the reason for bleeding. Localized causes: There are several possible causes within the nose for the rupture of a blood vessel. * Nasal septum deviation * Tumours of nose * Sinusitis * Injuries to nose Generalized cause for bleeding: The nose has a high density of blood vessels. Bleeding occurs easily if these are damaged. Certain diseases delay the clotting of blood and a patient with this condition may experience excessive nasal bleeding. * Platelets count becoming low due to Dengue. * Leukemia * Hemophilia * Liver problems causing deficiency of clotting factors If the blood pressure is high, patient must be kept under the care of a consultant physician for control of blood pressure. High blood pressure is not the cause of nasal bleeding, although excessive bleeding can occur due to high blood pressure. A patient on medication for high blood pressure must consequently have weekly checks and and follow medical advice accurately.
